Elena has spent her whole life perfecting a woman the world admires and cannot afford to be.

The Book

Roots to Sky

By any measure, Elena has escaped: the airless childhood house, the mother whose love arrived as accusation, the old country no one would name. None of her answers explain why a woman who commands any room goes cold at the touch of the man she trusts.

When Julian stops waiting on the other side of the table, Elena does what she has avoided all her life: she goes east. From the wet stone and ferry smoke of Istanbul to a half-empty village in the Black Sea mountains, down to a cove on the Aegean where the water goes quiet, she follows the fear back to the woman it was born in — before the same silence reaches the lives that come after her.

Roots to Sky is a novel of salt, coffee, and what the soul remembers when the mind refuses — a woman putting down a weight she carried so long she stopped naming it.

Author

Erdoğan Şemsiyeci

Erdoğan Şemsiyeci is a psychological counselor and family constellation practitioner in Turkey. For more than twenty years he has worked alongside people tracing the quiet inheritances that shape their lives — the loyalties, silences and debts that pass between generations. His own family carries two migrations: his father's from Romania (a borderland now in Bulgaria), his mother's from Georgia — each followed by the same silence. He is the author of SAT Metot, a book on family systems and his own method for applying constellation work to one's life, and has translated some twenty books and edited nearly a hundred. Roots to Sky, his first novel, began with a question he kept meeting in the consulting room: what happens to a person who discovers that the ancestor they were grieving was the one who caused the harm?
